A working product
Keeping conversations going across a language barrier.
Origins
Originally Project Keystone, research by INT6 Ltd into real-time bilingual conversation mediation. INT6 built the proof-of-concept application, which became a working system and was tested in real settings.
Academic validation
Independent evaluation has been arranged with UK university partners.
Ongoing Research
Can a machine hold context the way an interpreter does?
A human interpreter carries the room, the history and the register without being asked. How much of that can be wholly structured context and what is lost in the process?
Can a system recognise error?
Fidelity scoring is a model judging another model. The key question is determining where the score tracks real error and where models share the same blind spots.
Querying
Asking early prevents interrupting the flow of a distressed person.
Uncertainty?
A caution that gets ignored is no better than no warning.
What changes when the person holds the device?
Reading in your own hands is different from reading across a desk. Whether this affects disclosure remains unclear.
Boundaries?
This is for early conversations, not statutory ones, so the boundaries should be tested against what happens in practice.
Evaluation
The system generates evidence as it runs, improving measurability without extra instrumentation.
- How often a translation is revised before delivery and score movement.
- Ratio of 'asks' to 'answers' and what the conversation does next.
- How scores distribute by language, preventing uneven coverage disappearing into an average.
- Where people bypassed, repeated themselves or abandoned the exchange.
Status?
InMyWords is a working application.
Live turn-by-turn mediation with conversation history, structured facts and domain context.
Accuracy and corrections
If a translation score is below the required level, the system reviews and corrects it immediately. If something is unclear, it asks for clarification.
Two conversation surfaces
One screen people read together or two screens, where the client uses their own device.
Localised
Interface strings translated into cached languages.
Accounts, groups and audit
Organisation-level grouping and permissions, passkey and password authentication with two-factor codes and an audit log across conversations and administration.
An ordinary web stack
A PHP and MariaDB application served over HTTPS, it can be audited and validated easily.
